The town of Romsey is situated in Hampshire, England, close to the New Forest and just outside the city of Southampton. At the turn of the twentieth century Romsey was a well known market town boasting tanneries, breweries, numerous pubs, the iconic Abbey and the stately home Broadlands.

In 1911 Romsey had a population of approximately 6,800 people; over 1,500 would later serve their country in the First World War, some of whom never returned.
